I told you the other day that I would like to see Conor McGregor matched up with Justin Gaethje. And now I see I’m not the only one.
Monday on Ariel Helwani’s MMA show, Conor’s coach, John Kavanagh said he expects Conor to compete soon.
Kavanagh said, “I’d be very surprised if he doesn’t compete before summer. He’s definitely gonna be competing before summer.”
Kavanagh went on to say that he also expects McGregor to compete once again at 170 pounds.
I’m not sure why Conor wants to fight at 170 again.
Maybe he feels like he can train hard without dieting for the whole camp. That makes sense to me, especially since he isn’t calling out true welterweights. Cerrone and Gaethje are both lightweights, with both men having spent almost their entire careers there.
Kavanagh went on to say that a matchup with Gaethje would be fought “within a few weeks” of the Nurmagomedov-Ferguson in order to get on the same timeline for a possible rematch against Khabib.
If we get this matchup, (McGregor-Gaethje) fight fans will be treated to another fight that guarantees fireworks. I actually haven’t seen either of these two ever put on a boring fight.
Whoever is next for the former two-division champion, it is sure to be a huge event.
And don’t forget, this is the fifth time the UFC has booked Nurmagomedov-Ferguson and there are still two months to go before that fight. I don’t think anyone would be shocked if this jinxed plague nightmare had one more bad chapter to go. Conor is healthy and could step in should one of those two couldn’t make it to the cage.
Come back here for more updates about this possible matchup and for all of your other favorite fighters.
